Turning Tweets into Collaboration – Join us for the next #SBJourney Twitter Chat featuring Mike Kuczala Author of The Kinesthetic Classroom
With a Twitter chat on the horizon we sat down with Samuel Karns to “chat” face-to-face about the upcoming opportunity and the reason why social media is important for professionals.
What: #SBJourney Twitter Chat
When: Thursday, Oct. 12, 7-8 p.m. (Central)
Featuring the author of The Kinesthetic Classroom, Mike Kuczala (@kinestheticlass)
Kuczala will co-host the chat with @SBISD and the SBISD’s Coordinated School Health Program.
SBISD: Why a Twitter chat and how did you get involved?
KARNS: “Twitter chats are a great way to stay connected with our staff, as well as provide them with informal professional development to further support the great things they are doing. It’s a tool that extends our collaborative spirit with colleagues beyond just our campus walls. I participated in a few chats through the summer, and saw this as a great platform to inspire and equip our students, families, community, and staff with the tools they need to be successful. My interest led me to conversation with SBISD Communications.”
SBISD: When is the next opportunity for folks to join a chat experience?
KARNS: “The next chat is scheduled for October 12, 7-8 p.m. Central. The plan is to have monthly Twitter chats with different co-hosts/experts details and information.”
SBISD: What is the upcoming Twitter chat about? Why did you select this topic?
KARNS: “Given the recent innovative planning with district leaders and educators - kinesthetic learning, classroom, school redesign, flexible seating - we saw this fitting into a way that we can personalize learning to reach every child, and this allows us to interact with teachers and administrators. Having Mike Kuczala author of The Kinesthetic Classroom joining us is a great fit.”
SBISD: How can educators and parents participate?
KARNS: “Follow the hashtag #SBJourney and make sure to include that hashtag when participating on Twitter so others can see your tweets. We will have a Q and A session starting at 7 p.m. We’ll post Q1 on @SBISD, the school district’s Twitter channel. Participants simply start with "A1" and include the hashtag when answering or commenting on others.”
SBISD: What do you hope participants take away from experience?
KARNS: “The hope is that folks will gain more knowledge and understanding of why kids need the movement to support their learning but also some strategies they can use directly in their classroom or wherever they may have a platform to do so. It’s professional development with colleagues and peers.”
SBISD: Why is this a logical fit to supports professional development and expand the conversation?
KARNS: “This allows leaders to informally interact as well as provide the district with a way to personalize the professional development for all stakeholders. This is a great way to engage folks with all kinds of experiences and wisdom. It provides everyone an opportunity to observe, collaborate and support one another in work.”
SBISD: What’s your hope for next steps?
KARNS: “The hope is to sustain a monthly Twitter chat. This is a grassroots idea that the school district sees value in. They are supporting the idea and the work. This upcoming chat is the first of many in the works. We aim to include district leaders as co-host on future chats. We want to give all stakeholders an opportunity to interact and collaborate in the larger conversation in service of #everychild. If our staff adopts this, we want to utilize other collaborative technology tools to deepen collaboration within campuses and across feeder patterns. This is just the beginning!”
