Computer Science Education Week - Dec. 9 to 15

Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) is Dec. 9-15 this year. Educators can encourage their students to participate in the Hour of Code activity as part of the week's celebration. If you haven't already heard, over 3 million students are now signed up to learn.

The Hour of Code is an opportunity for students to explore the area of computer science for one hour.

What is Computer Science Education Week?
The week is observed in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906). The Hour of Code is just one of many different events planned for CSEdWeek. If you are a CS teacher, see our Participation Kit for CS Teachers, and if you plan a special event tell us about it so we can celebrate your hard work.

What's an Hour of Code?
It's a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code" and show that anyone can learn the basics to be a maker, a creator, an innovator. Participants are provided with a variety of self-guided tutorials that anybody can do, on a browser, tablet, or smartphone. Unplugged tutorials for classrooms without computers will be offered. No experience needed.

With CSEdWeek just 2 weeks away, what should you do now?

Register. If you registered your entire school for the Hour of Code, ask each participating teacher to also individually register to host an Hour of Code IF they want to receive 10GB of DropBox storage as a thank you gift. Under "estimated number of students, write zero. Under "Is your entire school participating?" Select "Yes."

Choose a tutorial. You can plan ahead with educator notes and choose a tutorial appropriate for your students (additional offline activity if you have low bandwidth or no Internet access).
