New Standardized School Year and Effect on
11- and 12-month Employees and Others Who Receive the First Check of their Duty
Year Prior to September 1
TRS has also recently adopted changes in rules that detail how TRS will apply the new definition of school year in determining the amount of annual compensation credited to a member.
Here is a link to an article on the TRS website that explains the new Standardized school year and its effect on compensation and service credit for benefit purposes.
The new definition of school year will effect the compensation that is credited for 11- and 12- month employees (and any other employees who receive the first check of their duty year prior to September 1) in their last year of employment, if they choose to retire at the end of their duty year.
This change may also affect the amount of compensation that is reported on the annual TRS statements for those employees. If you have questions when you receive your statement, please contact TRS at 1-800-223-8778.
Employees affected by this change to a “standard year” who are considering retirement at the end of their 2013-2014 duty year may wish to contact TRS or attend a TRS Group Benefit Presentation for clarification on how the new standardized school year may personally affect them.
